24-Hour pH Study

This information  was prepared to give you information about your upcoming 24-hour pH monitoring procedure. Any questions regarding this procedure should be directed to your personal physician or the GI Lab at (405) 602-3932.

PURPOSE:
This procedure will measure how often stomach acid backs up (refluxes) into your esophagus (swallowing tube) during a 24 hour period.

PREPARATION:
In order to obtain accurate results, it is necessary for you to avoid certain medications and activities prior to this procedure.

MEDICATIONS:
You will need to stop the following medications for 5 days prior to the test: Prevacid (Lansoprazole), Prilosec (Omeprazole), Aciphex, Protonix.

You may begin taking over the counter medications until 24 hours prior.

Stop these medications 24 hours prior: Zantac (Ranitidine ), Tagamet (Cimetidine), Pepcid (Famotidine), Reglan (Metoclopromide HCL), Propulsid (Cisapride), plus any antacids (Tums, Rolaids, Mylanta, etc.).

DIET:
DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING 6 HOURS PRIOR TO THE TEST.

PROCEDURE DETAILS:

Length of exam: Approximately 1 hour.

Anesthetics: You will NOT be sedated for this procedure.  A topical numbing gel and spray are used in the nose and throat. This will wear off after about 20-30 minutes. You will be awake during the procedure and should be able to drive afterwards without difficulty.

Procedure: A small flexible probe is passed through the nose, down the throat and into the stomach. The probe is very slender and should go down with minimal difficulty. It is then positioned midway in the esophagus and taped securely to the nose, cheek and neck. This will not interfere with eating or breathing. The probe is connected to a recording unit that records how often stomach acid comes up into your throat and how long the episodes last. The recording unit is not waterproof. You will return the next day to have the probe removed.

The laboratory assistant will be on call for you during the 24-hour period if you have any questions or concerns.  The unit will record reflux events during the entire 24 hours.  There will be a diary to complete as well as buttons on the box that you will push to record symptoms, meals, and bedtime.  You will NOT be able to shower, tub bathe, or swim as the equipment is not waterproof.

POST CARE INFORMATION:

You will be able to resume your medications after the probe is removed. Your nose and throat may be slightly irritated. Your sinuses may drain and you may have a slight nose bleed. This usually subsides with 12-24 hours. The Clinical Director will interpret your results and send a report to your physician within 2 working days. Your physician is responsible for reviewing the results with you.
