This information was prepared to give you general information about your upcoming Anorectal Manometry procedure. Any individual problems or questions regarding this procedure should be directed to your personal physician or call the GI lab at (405) 602-3932 PURPOSE: PREPARATION: DIET: MEDICATION: CLOTHING: PROCEDURE DETAILS: You will not be sedated. You may drive yourself. You will be asked to read and sign consent forms. Your insurance cards will be copied for billing purposes. You will be asked questions regarding your symptoms. You will be positioned on your left side at the start of the procedure. The physician / physiologist will perform a rectal exam and then place a small probe into your rectum. There will be certain times during the study you will be asked to squeeze the anal muscles and then relax. There is a balloon on the end of the probe that will be gently inflated with air to measure how well you can feel sensations of fullness in your rectum. When this portion of the procedure is complete, the balloon will be deflated and the probe will be removed. Depending on your diagnosis, you may be involved in the second portion of the procedure. A small rubber tube with a balloon on the tip will be inserted into the rectum and inflated with enough air to simulate stool. You will then be asked to sit on a portable commode and expel the balloon as if you were having a bowel movement. This assesses your ability to relax the external sphincter muscles during a bowel movement. It also shows how well you are able to increase the pressure inside the rectum, which is necessary to help move stool through the anal canal.
