Esophageal Motility

This information was prepared to give you general information about your upcoming esophageal motility procedure. Any individual problems regarding this procedure should be directed to your personal physician. With questions regarding the procedure itself, please call the GI Lab at (405) 602-3932.

PURPOSE:
This procedure will measure how well your esophagus (swallowing tube) works to move food and fluids into your stomach each time you swallow. It also measures how well the lower esophageal sphincter relaxes. This muscle is the barrier that keeps food and fluids in your stomach and not in your throat.

PREPARATION:
In order to obtain an accurate and complete assessment of esophageal function, it is necessary to avoid certain medications and activities prior to this procedure. We ask that you follow these guidelines:

Please stop these medications for 24 hours prior to the procedure:

Propulsid (Cisapride), Reglan (Metoclopramide HCL), Bentyl ( Dicyclomine HCL), Levsin (Hyoscyamine Sulfate), Librax (Chlordiazide HCL & Clidinium Bromide), Zantac, Pepcid, Axid, Tagamet, etc.

Please do not take any antacids 24 hours prior to the procedure (Tums, Maalox, Mylanta, etc.).

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK ANYTHING 6 HOURS PRIOR TO THE PROCEDURE.

Please do not smoke 2 hours prior to the procedure.

PROCEDURE DETAILS:

Length of exam: Approximately 1 hour.

Anesthetics: A topical numbing gel and spray are used in the nose and throat. This will wear off after about 20 - 30 minutes. You will be awake during the procedure and should be able to drive afterwards without difficulty. You will NOT be sedated for this procedure.

Procedure: A small probe is passed through your nose, down your esophagus and into your stomach. The probe will be moved several times up and down your esophagus to measure how well it can "squeeze" and "relax" to move food and fluids into your stomach. You will be given sips of water to drink and beef stew to eat during the procedure. The probe will not interfere with your ability to breathe or swallow.

POST CARE INFORMATION:
If this is the only procedure you are having, you should be able to resume your normal diet and medication after the procedure is completed. If you are scheduled for a 24 hour pH study to follow this procedure, you will need to follow the guidelines in that brochure.

Your nose and throat may be slightly irritated from the probe. You may notice a slight nosebleed ( this is rare) and sinus drainage. This is normal. You may use throat lozenges to help with any discomfort you may have experienced. These discomforts usually subside within 12 - 24 hours.

The Clinical Director will interpret the results and send a copy to your referring physician. The report usually arrives within 2 business days. Your physician is responsible for reviewing these results with you. If you need your results sent to another physician’s office you can get those records from the physician who sent you here.
